Conclusion

I did not use many websites for research in this task, i had mainly just used www.google.co.uk and www.youtube.com, i used google for images such as the illusion of movement. YouTube i had used to research the differnt techniques and see how the differ from each other and youtube provide lots of results under each topic. I had watched plenty of videos on each technique to gain a better understanding of the technique as well as looking up tutorials on each technique to see how they are made.

I had covered the main areas of animation in this blog which had included flash, drawn on film and photographic stills animation, i had gave my view on each technqiue and also provide some images and video clips for each technqiue.

Flash Animation

Flash animation is created using Adobe Flash, it allows you to bring in images from the web or your own images and create whatever movement you wish, we had a try at this by creating a scene in a town with a car, plane etc. We had created a few scenes and played them together to create our first flash animation, i found it hard to use at the beginning but it was becoming easier as i used more of it.

Photographic Stills

Photographic stills can be used for animation like stop motion’s etc, this is when you take a series of photos and put them all together in order to create the illusion of movement.

Advantages of this method is that it can be made with not many resources, you can create anything you want, disadvantages are that it takes some time to create and edit the photos for this method.

I really like this method of animation as you can create anything you want from everyday items just like the video below will show.

On the internet there are plenty of videos showing this technique in action as well as how to create an animation of this sort. I really like watching some of the videos created by people especially the creaters of the video below PES who have many videos on this topic as they specialize in this animation technique, they even create animations for big brands for their advertisements which shows how popular this technique can be.

The video below shows an animation by PES which is fun to watch and will also show you how they just use everyday items to create very well put together photographic stills animations.

Drawn on Film

Drawn on Film animation is what it sounds like, the animation is drawn on the film reel. This method skips the process of Cel animation, photographing and video sequencing, or the process of digital rendering, drawn on film shows the image on individual frames in the reel of film.

Advantages of this technique is that you can skip a lot of processes by drawing on film, disadvantages of this technique are you cant make many mistakes and once again you cannot save your work.

I personally would not use this technique as im not brilliant at drawing so instead of this i would prefer to use a computer animation program such as adobe flash.

Below is a video showing you how to use this technique.

Rotoscoping

This animation technique is when animators trace over footage frame by frame for animated films, the frames that have been traced over can be used to make a short animated film which look like realistic images but in sketches.

Advantages of this are it is easy to create, you can save your work as it will be on a computer, disadvantages of this technique is that you must get the exact video that you want to animate.

In my opinion this technique would be harder to create an animation from and also you are quite restricted with what you can and cannot use in your animation. Because you need to use a clip thats already been created by someone you can't use alot of your imagination in the animation.

Below is a clip created with using the rotoscoping technique, this will show how it is created and also how the finished product will look.

Cel Animation

Cel animation is a hand drawn animation, you use a light box with some plastic sheets over it with drawings on it, the finished cels are gave to a photographer, he then photographs the background and their matching cells in relation to the creators instructions.

Advantages of this technique is that you can make animations easily and have several layers to your animations so mistakes could be easily undone, the disadvantages of this technique are that it may takes some time to complete as well as the amount of cels you need to use for a full animation.

The video below shows an animation created with this technique, this will show you how this techniques animation looks when finished.

Flip / Flick Book

A Flip / Flick book animation is once again using the illusion of movent or persistance of vision to create an animation drawn by hand.

This type of animation is created by drawing an animation in a book page by page and changing the image on each page a little so when moved at speed you get the illusion of movement, this type of animation can be viewed easily on YouTube with some examples of profeesional and amature flip books.

The above video shows an example of a very well made Flip book animation, the advantages of this technique would be that you can create what you want how you want it as with computer programs you may run into problems wondering how to do something, all you need for a flip book animation is pretty much an empty book and a pencil, the disadvantage would be you cant save or have a copy of what you had created incase of a mistake or damage to the book, also if you use a computer program such as Adobe Flash you have a save and also it never looses its quality and stays how it was create forever a flip book will get some wear and tear on it and loose quality and possibly even get lost.

Persistance of Vision

2D Animation has many differnt forms to come in however they all rely on the persistance of vision which is basically the illusion of movement.

To create the illusion of movement you need at least 24 Frames per second (FPS), the illusion of movement has been used for many years being first discovered accidently by Eadweard Muybridge who took pictures of a horse running at differnt points on the track and when he put the images together it looked just like the horse was galloping.

2D Animation is quite popular on the internet and it is easy to find examples of 2D animation.
It is very easy nowadays to create a 2D Animation as all resources needed are available and you could     use a differnt technique if you cant use some resources needed for another, a simple way of creating an animation would be using Adobe Flash as i have been using it for a few weeks now and it is easy to get the hang of and simple to use, the advantages of this is that you can save any progress you have made and start from where you last saved which is good incase you make a mistake like on a flip book where you have to start again.

Introduction

Hi my names Peter and in this blog i will discuss what i have learnt about 2D Animation, i will discuss the differnt types of animation used including flip books and roto scoping as well as showing examples of each technique to give a better understanding of its use.
